Volunteering and me
My name is Paul Allchurch and I want to share with you my journey of how volunteering got me where I am today, and how volunteering can be important in supporting one “journey of hope.”
To put it into some context and share my background with you, volunteering has been a part of my life for as long I can remember. From my early teens with the St John Ambulance to today with Carers Wales as a Media Volunteer.
In all roles, my love for the sector is as strong now as ever been and I strongly believe the sector mission statement of ‘making a difference’.
This is particularly important to me, as it is entrenched throughout my being and that of my journey.
My one constant has been my love for the not-for-profit sector and that of knowing that I make difference. It has also been a key feature of my “journey of hope” as it supports the belief if you love what you do, you do not have to work again!
So, when I saw the advertisement for the role as Volunteering Mentoring Officer for the Carmarthenshire Association Voluntary Services, this was an opportunity that I could not ignore, so I applied, and I was shortlisted for it.
I had an interview, which was great to have, as I had got to that stage.
I remember the day of the interview, as it was a very wet and windy day, and the car did not start!
I then had to wait for the outcome and then on the Friday the Chief Officer of CAVS, informed of that I was successful.
So here I am here today working with CAVS as their new Volunteering Mentoring Officer and I am loving every minute of it!
If you can dream it,
you can live it
and achieve anything you want to be.
SEIZE THE OPPORTUNITIES AND NOT GIVE UP!

I think the enjoyment I get from Volunteering must go way back to my late Father. Although totally blind, with a Guide Dog, he spent years organising, and running, our local Residents Association. In fact when he died the local paper said Blind, he blazed a Trail of Public Service! As a child I was dragged into helping out with some of the paperwork!! followed as a young woman by Meals on Wheels.
I have been doing Country Cars for more years than I care to announce in public, gives too many secrets away!! When my late Husband Reg and I moved to Wales we volunteered as drivers, as we were looking to spend some time in retirement in as they say “Giving something back”. Right from the beginning we loved it. We thought then, and I still do that it is a great service for people, not always older people, but those that needed transport from A to B. In fact it is useful if you are having eye treatment as then you cannot drive yourself. We have met so many people over the years, some still in contact with, one or two have become close friends.
For the last five or six years I have been the Scheme Organiser for Carmarthen area, however this has spread to a much wider area, particularly since the start of Covid, and loss of drivers. You meet such a variety of people, some very interesting, some more needy than others. Sometimes when you are lonely it is good to get a phone call, sometimes it can be a pain in the butt if your favourite TV show is on! People will ring and say “I am new, I need a “taxi” tomorrow!” Firstly we are not a Taxi Service, then I need to know who you are, where you live, do you have a bus pass? Sometimes you get, I need the Dentist in ??? which dentist? I dont know the address! Please phone dentist and ask for address and postcode “OH”. Some people think they can choose which driver they can use, unfortunately you can’t. We are all volunteers, some work the odd couple of days a week, others work more, but we may need a day off for our own health appts!
99% of our passengers are very pleasant, one or two can be somewhat demanding, rarely do we get anyone unpleasant! Some don’t see anyone for days on end and long to talk to another person. Some just want/need to get out.
At the end of it all, we cannot do well without our delightful Manager Simon!

Rory Volunteers for the John Burns Foundation and Mencap Cymru
Hello everyone my name is Rory and I am 38 years old.
I am a volunteer at the Carmarthen British Red Cross shop once a week, where I stock the shelves with books and DVDs. stock rotation, and help out in the back room.
As well as the Red Cross shop. I sit on the easy read group for the Hywel Dda University Health Board.
Also with the Health Board, I have also helped to teach student speech and language therapists sign language.
Now I do volunteering at the John Burns Foundation with Mencap which is brill
Helping out at the John Burns Foundation with Mencap is great as each week the group gets to do different jobs each week such as gardening, cooking, and even going out on day trips.
Mencap and the John Burns Foundation treat everyone as equal which I believe is really important.
The advice I would give to someone who wants to give volunteering a go is this;
Do your research on what kind of voluntary work you would like to do by going online or popping into the CAVS office in Carmarthen where staff there will be able to help you.
Do not be afraid to give anything a go
Always believe in yourself
